How to Downlight your Homes

By Shelley E. Weeks

Recessed lights, or more commonly known as downlights, are the best when it comes to lighting homes in a discreetly way and combines with whatever decorations you have chosen. This is the primary reason why these lamps become the central trend in interior designing these past years.

Downlights are excellent substitute to the conventional hanging lamps. They are even more advantageous because they do not need to be hung in the centre of the ceiling for both home balance and light distribution. Instead, they can be positioned almost anywhere you want. Furthermore, they can't have an effect to your home's aesthetic; because they are recessed, it doesn't matter where they are positioned.

Types of Downlights

- Fixed

This type of down lighter is decorative and has a fixed centre. The lamp is usually immovable within the holder either by using a twist lock mechanism or by using a spring clip. The twist lock is usually used in higher quality cast aluminum fixtures has a section that is detachable and twists and locks into place while griping the bulb in position.

- Gimbal

It is made the same way as the other types of recessed bulbs and usually has similar type of bulb retainer when installed in the ceiling. However, the fixture's centre can be tilted to adjust the spotlight beam. Actually, it can be tilted towards any part of the house.

Eyeball

Eyeball is similar to gimbal but it can be adjusted to greater range. The eyeball allows you to adjust the lamp at any angle you want.

- Wall Washer

Wall washer is also mounted to the ceiling but has different function. They can make a 90-degree rotation and is used to light the walls as opposite to straight down.

How to Install Recessed Lamps

If you want to install your own recessed lamps, these steps may really help you out:

1. Pick the best type of lamp you want to install. Eyeball is the most often used because of its ability to be focused anywhere.

Using a pencil, mark the ceiling where you decided to place the lamp. The ideal spacing for these bulbs is from 6 to 8 feet except if installed in a single room.

To ensure safety, make sure that the power has been turned off and cover or move any furniture under to prevent dust to get in.

To start with, install the housing of the light in the ceiling and make sure that it is properly wired.

Turn the power back from the main switch and turn the lights on to ensure that the lighting system works.

Installing lighting fixture is so easy as long as you know how to properly follow the steps. If you follow these steps, you don't have to pay for an electrician's service.

Recessed lights have become the most popular lighting system because of the benefits they can offer. The 240-volt downlights are commonly used in hotels, bars and night clubs, or even in some residential homes because they can produce brighter light. On the other hand, halogen downlights and LED downlights are most often used in homes because they are more energy-saving.
