Tips For Maintaining Leather Goods Due For Storage

By Roger Mitchell

The majority of people wear leather products in winter and as soon as the season is over, they store them somewhere safe so that they can use it in the next season. The Material is known to be durable and can last for long if you store and maintain it appropriately. The moment you acquire any products from this material, treat them the same way you would handle your automobile. When leather goods are stored properly, you will be surprised by how they function and look even years after you purchase them. Below are tips to help you out:

When storing your leather products like shoes and jackets, you may want to maintain their shape even after storing them for quite some time. One way of ensuring you retain shape is by use of an acid-free stuffing paper. Do not make a mistake of using an acid paper as this will damage the material.

When storing clothes, you need to hang instead of folding them to prevent creases. Continued creases stress the leather making it crack. Also, it is advisable to use wooden hangers over plastic ones when hanging clothes. This is because plastic hangers are susceptible to a plastic deformation called creep, and this causes the material to be destroyed due to the heavy weight of the cloth.

Before you store the leathers, it is also important to apply significant conditioners or moisturizer made specifically for them. This is because they have a component of lanolin, beeswax, and also coconut oil. The substances are very useful since they protect the materials from moisture and dirt.

Ensure you store the leather items in a well-ventilated container. By using an airtight container will cause all the moisture to build up and finally damage your product. A well-aerated container allows for the frequent in and out the flow of air ensuring the items keep fresh with no odor at all.

Think of getting a good dehumidifier and place it to your storage area. This is necessary as it absorbs excessive moisture thereby preventing damage to your stored goods. Moisture is necessary for preventing cracking of the material, but it is only required in moderate amount. Too much of it ends up damaging the products. Also, avoid keeping your leather items in direct sunlight. This is because sunlight is the worst enemy of the material. It destroys the fibers present in the material making it dry and eventually cracks. Sun is a bleaching agent and may look your products look pale and faded. To avoid this, always store your items in a cool dark place.

If a drink spills on your items, you need to remove the wet spot with a soft, absorbent cloth immediately. You can also soak the cloth in a water solution and clean with a mild non-detergent soap. Also, avoid applying perfumes and hairspray while wearing your products. Chemicals that are present in these products are dangerous and can damage the leather.

There are also professionals who can advise you more on how to maintain your valuable leather items. Your local dry cleaner may also be offering such service in an aim of making sure your lavish products are safe and secure.
