Selecting The Most Popular From The Wholesale Christmas Trees Virginia Farmers Grow

By Dennis Anderson

If you are planning to make some extra money this year opening a holiday tree lot, you have to start making decisions early. You will need to contract with a farmer and have your tree order in no later than October 1. Which plants to buy should reflect what customers are looking for. You want to choose the best and most popular varieties from the wholesale Christmas trees Virginia farmers have to offer.

In most areas of the country, the Fraser Fir is the most popular holiday tree. This is for good reason. It has a beautiful blue-green color and is soft to the touch. Buyers love the almost perfect conical form most of the plants have. They also like the fact that the needles are short, and the branches have enough room between them to make decorating easy.

The Noble Fir is another tree your customers are sure to ask for. This is a deep green tree with gracefully shaped branches. As with the Fraser, the Noble Fir's branches have space between them which makes it easy to place long hanging ornaments. The branches are also sturdy enough to accommodate heavy decorations.

The Grand Fir is a tree that is very pleasing to the eye. It is dark green with short, soft needles. It is less appropriate for heavy ornaments than the Fraser or Noble. The branches bend too easily to hold weight well. The Grand Fir has height however. They are great for homes with open or two story great rooms, and homeowners who want to make a dramatic statement with their tree.

Balsam Firs are favorites with families that love to fill their homes with the smell of a living tree. Balsam Firs are very aromatic with nice form and pretty dark green needles. They will not hold heavy ornaments however. The branches are too light and delicate for that.

Pine trees don't tend to make the top ten list of favorites, but the Eastern White Pine is the exception. Customers who love this tree are attracted to its beautiful feathery branches with their long, soft needles. These branches make wonderful wreaths and garlands. The feathery quality prevents placement of heavy ornaments however.

The Douglas Fir is a perennial favorite with many families. It has shiny green needles and can grow as large as the Grand Fir. It is not a good tree for holding heavy ornaments though, and it can be difficult to decorate because the branches can get too dense to hang dangling type decorations.

If you want to see trees fly off your lot this year, you need to offer what people are looking for. Everybody has favorites, and the more varieties you offer, the more likely you are to make a sale. Buying the hardiest, healthiest, and best looking trees is the best way keep your customers coming back year after year.
