For Sod Minnesota Is Worth Visiting

By Mary Russell

Grass grown on solid stands and then harvested together with their roots to form thin layers is known as sod. It can then be bought and laid in other places. Landscapers and building contractors are the ones that mostly use sod for covering green areas especially in projects. Arks, golf courses, home lawns, athlete fields, and schools among others are examples of the projects. Production of high quality grass capable of resisting extreme climates and pests is the main reason as to why sod is well cultivated. For good sod Minnesota should be visited

It is planted under specialized conditions in specialized farms. So the farm has to be well prepared before planting. Some of the preparations include clearing the land of any rocks, shrubs, weeds and debris. It should be clear without any of this. Then the land is leveled accordingly so as to produce leveled layers.

The cropping history of the land should be accounted for by the farmer as proper investigation is also done. This is mainly done to discover pest problems and infestations of the weed which are likely to occur. Organic fertilizer is then added to the grass. This is usually done after clearing of the field and leveling has been completed.

Organic fertilizer is environmental friendly and is always compatible with different types of soil. It is gentle on the microorganisms living in the soil. These microorganisms are responsible for aerating the soil and keeping it fertile. On the other hand, artificial fertilizer can be toxic to these microorganisms thereby destroying them. This results to lowering of the soil fertility.

The field is then tilled in preparation of planting immediately after application of fertilizer. Seed beds are then prepared and sods are planted finally. The site of preparation and observation of seasons is very vital. As this facilitate extreme production which increases the income of sods. During summer, the abundance in rain make it suitable to plant them. This reduces the rate at which irrigation will be done.

For faster growth, it is important for one to maintain the sod. Planted sod can be maintained using several ways. Improving the density of the grass by making it intertwine more so as to create a thick layer is done by mowing the sod. Mowing also helps in excess removal of the grass and controlling weeds. This therefore results to quality grass.

Pest control is also important in maintaining sod. Pests reduce the quality of grass and may destroy it leading to decrease in production. So it is very important for one to control pests throughout the production period. These pests include ants and white grubs. Likewise, diseases can be a big problem to the production if not addressed on time.

The time taken for sod to maturely grow is six weeks. Sod has to remain intact after it has been cut and therefore a sharp tool should be used during harvesting. Installation and harvesting of sod has to be done on the same day because it is very perishable. It can also not be transported for long distances.
