Simple Facts About Using Goats For Clearing Land

By Ann Thompson

Most farmland has at least one spot that is not used at its full potential because it is covered in unwanted weeds and brush. It is not only costly but also time consuming to try to clear the land yourself or have someone do it for you. Depending on the type of land and weeds that are on it, it can also be dangerous, especially for those known to be allergic to poison oak and poison ivy. There are a few ways that you can control those types of weeds. Using goats for clearing land is growing in popularity and is a safe alternative that most people consider before tackling the problem.

The fact of the matter is, the goat is helpful in many different areas. They have been used for many years by farmers to help them on the land and other purposes. They are not only good looking animals, they are very helpful and produce many usable products, you just need to know what to look for in the breeds you should use.

There are many people that love to have at least two of them around to help control weeds such as poison ivy and other natural nuisances. Although they have a taste for weeds and brush, they do not usually eat grass, so they do not help keep your grass mowed.

Before you run out and buy a goat, you need to remember an important fact. They are known to hang out in packs. A single goat will not be as happy as it would be if there were two of them. The plus to this is that if you have the room for two, they can keep twice as many weeds off the area they have access to.

Another thing to remember is that in order to get milk from a female goat, they have to become pregnant. They can keep producing milk for up to a year after having the kid, making it a very productive part of the farm family. Goat milk can make wonderful soaps and lotions. It is also known to sooth digestive issues in both young and older people. Talk to your doctor about your condition before trying any type of home remedy.

There is a certain breed of goat that has a small stature that produces as much, sometimes more, than a full sized goat. Known as a La Mancha, these are amazing producers of milk and is an excellent choice for those that do not have the room for two or more full sized animals.

Some goat breeds are known to be great protectors of other farm animals. They have been used to deter predators away from livestock, including cattle and chickens. It is a well known fact that many breeds get along well with chickens and will protect them from predators such as snakes and weasels. The fainting breed is known for keeping coyotes and other predators away from cattle and horses.

To find the right goat for your farm family, research the breeds. It is important to understand the regular maintenance and care that each breed needs before you get a couple. Kids are very cute but remember, they grow up and some breeds get very big.
