Importance Of Framing For Designers

By Alice Bursnell

You might ask why framing is such an important aspect in any piece of art. Well framing for designers goes beyond just acting as a border for the art. It serves to accentuate the finished product, sort of like breathing life into the artwork. Frames exist in many different materials but the most common ones are metal, wood and plastic.

Artists are able to create many different designs by simply manipulating the primary tools. This may vary from creating different patterns, taking two different wood types and merging them together or even simply painting the frame with different shades of the same color.

An adept designer has to understand when to apply a particular framework. The key to capturing the viewers eye is to choose a border that perfectly compliments the artwork itself. Given that the frame is so distinct and cannot be missed by the eye, one has to be careful not to make a poor selection. Poor choices can in effect ruin the entire presentation.

Since art is all about expression, an artist should decide on what frame design would most closely relate to the idea they are trying to bring forth. Major considerations include materials to apply, the type of matting to use and which mounting board would add to the allure. The glass cover may be essential but not compulsory.

Wooden borders are well liked among art designers due to their ability to bring individuality to the piece. The availability of many wood types only serve to increase their versatility. In addition, the artist is at liberty to add their personal touch by engraving intricate designs on the plain pieces of wood. This usually compounds the appeal it would draw from the viewer.

When working with metal, an artist may not necessarily be at liberty to tinker around with the customization of the frame as he would if it were wooden. This however does not mean that metal would not ideally add aesthetic value to the picture. In some cases working with wood would yield terrible results. Picture a black and white painting on a brown clear vanish border. Clearly it lacks appeal. This is the saving grace for the other materials since wood will not always be the best choice.

The significance of the matting on the final appeal is also as important as the frame design. The matting lies between the border and the image. It is important since it draws the gaze inwards towards the picture. To prevent damaging of the picture, a glass cover is installed. Some artists usually choose to leave it out while some consider it essential to their presentation.

What is clear is that the decision to pick a suitable frame design all lies in the hands of the designer
