By Sharon Roberts

Flowers are known for their ability to produce beauty, elegance and perfume wherever they are found. They have evolved in modern times to become necessary tools for decorators and home makers around the world.Moth Orchids are among the most sought after decorative plants in the world. This is so because for many, they embody the ideal mixture of convenience and beauty.

The flower's moth-like appearance earned it the name. As a matter of fact the name is directly derived from a Greek word, phalluna which means moth. It is a species that comprises about sixty sub species. The flower is Asian in origin but it has gained such widespread popularity that it is cultivated in locations around the globe.

These beautiful decorative plants come in various hues. Some of the more popular hues are, green, yellow, purple, lavender white and red. Some varieties even come with a speckled color pattern. The speckled variety typically features intricately dense patterns of a deeper hue against a backdrop of a lighter hue in a deeper concentration at the inner end of the petal and gradually petering out into the lighter hue at the end. The varying colors and designs makes it easy for flowers enthusiast can find a hue to match their preference.

With the myriad of colors and patterns available, it is not hard to see how the flowers can be a dream come true for novice and expert decorators. Homes and office environments are made more appealing and comfortable by their presence. Additionally, they bring an atmosphere of elegance to formal events such as wedding receptions.

The flowers look exotic but they do not require extensive support for survival. This is one of the main factors that make them appealing to today's flowers enthusiasts. Their ease of maintenance is one feature that has made them the preferred house plant of many home makers.

Environments that have low concentrations of sunlight are perfect for this plant. The original environments in which they thrived features limited sunlight. In the home they are best located by windows that admit a small amount of sunlight. In the open they thrive best in the shade of taller plants. The fact that very little sunlight is required makes it easy for people in non tropical environments to grow the plants. Sunlight replacement such as UV lighting can do the trick as well.

Like other plants the Moth Orchid needs water. Due to the fact that it only has one stem though, it is unable to store sufficient water to sustain itself for long periods. This means frequent watering is important to its survival. This is addressed using simple methods such as a drip watering contraption. A simple version of this sis a bottle punctured to allow small amounts of water to seep out.

The Phalaenopsis is quite a magnificent plant. It provides mankind with elegant beauty and all it requires is a little attention. In short it is essentially what horticulturalists call the perfect flower.
