Information Regarding The Process Of Sod Installation

By Ruth Cooper

Basically, sod is just grass. The fact that it is not grown on grass is the main difference. The growing of sod is done on specific farms by farmers who are specialized. Specific farm equipment is normally used to harvest turf whenever it is ready. The equipment used normally cut sod into standardized regular sizes or squares. From there, they are rolled and transported to intended market for sale. Sod installation is done after that.

Completely matured sods are harvested and normally used for golf courses, lawns and stadiums. Home builders and landscapers also sometimes buy them. They are normally useful when building residential projects. Sods helps in controlling soil erosion, since they establish lawn faster. Sometimes turf can be used for renovation of areas affected by soil erosion and lawns damaged by sports activities.

Installation of sods is the process of laying turf in a required area. The process of installing sods requires a lot of concentration, focus and time. But first one has to consider certain factors before buying or installing turf in a particular area. A person needs to determine how much turf they need to buy. They can achieve this by measuring the area where the turf is to be placed.

Determining the type of grass is also important. This is determined by testing the soil of the area in order to ensure it is compatible with the turf It also reveals underlying issues that might affect the product when it is installed. Before buying turf one should also be clear on the best time to do it, otherwise it will not do well.

There are so many steps that are involved when installing sods. One is required to prepare the soil as the first step. This is usually done before purchasing the sods because their life shelf is short. Therefore, when bought, they are supposed to be installed instantly. One of the site preparations is the getting rid of debris and weeds. All the lawns have to be killed. That will help reducing competition when sods are installed.

The best place for setting up the turf is along the longest straight lines. Straight lines can be found along sidewalks and driveways. Stretching of the product so as to prevent gaps should be avoided. Edges should be pushed against each other. There should be staggered turf joined in each row. A large knife or a machete may be used during trimming. Regular use of blunt objects destroys the grass.

It is recommended that sods are supposed to be watered immediately after the installation. Watering the soils makes it wet and thus bond with grass firmly. To keep the soils moist, one has to water weekly continuously. That will maintain soft underfoot. Oozing is discouraged hence one is supposed to be careful.

After installation, maintenance should be done frequently. Sods are also supposed to be mowed and fertilized. Control of pests is done by commended individuals. Weeds are required to be controlled before causing damage to the newly installed sods. All of these are meant to make sure that sods stay healthy.
